College Sustainability Report Card 2009

The University of South Alabama has a Faculty Senate Environmental Quality Committee that looks into recycling, the use of resources on campus, and construction initiatives.

The university has not made public any steps taken to address energy efficiency or conservation possibilities, and has not made headway toward the use of renewable energy.

The university supports a local dairy and purchases organic fruits and vegetables when feasible. Dining services provides a discount for the use of reusable containers and is trying to implement a similar program for reusable cups. This year, a trayless dining initiative will aim to save water, electricity, and gas. The Faculty Senate Environmental Quality Committee has worked to improve the recycling program, but recycling depends on the maintenance staff in each building.

The university has no known green buildings or a green building policy.

The Sierra Student Coalition hosts some activities pertaining to sustainability. There are few opportunities for students to become involved with environmental organizations on campus and no related university-sponsored internships or outreach programs exist.

Significant funds have been invested in developing and maintaining a shuttle system of trams and buses to transport students around campus. The university's maintenance vehicle fleet has been converted to natural gas-powered vehicles.

The university and the University of South Alabama Foundation have no known policy of disclosure of endowment holdings or shareholder voting records.

The university and the foundation aim to optimize investment return and have not made any public statements about investigating or investing in renewable energy funds or community development loan funds.
