COA's strategic plan includes a goal to develop and manage the campus using principles of sustainability. The Campus Committee for Sustainability has worked on increasing bicycle use, improving the composting program, and planning sustainability orientation activities. COA employs a full-time consulting adviser for sustainability. A purchasing policy mandates that COA purchase only Energy Star products. All landscaping is maintained using organic methods.

Climate Change & Energy
A 
COA has committed to reducing its emissions to 15 percent below 2007 levels by 2009. The college buys 100 percent of its electricity in the form of hydropower. One boiler is powered with locally produced, renewable wood pellets. Boiler controls and temperature sensors have been installed to save fuel, and all incandescent bulbs have been replaced with CFLs.

Food & Recycling
A 
The college purchases food from 11 local farms and uses some produce from the campus's organic farm, as well as the campus community garden. All eggs and meat are confinement-free, and nearly all beef is grass-fed. COA purchases hormone-free meat and dairy. Dining halls use only reusable dishware and have eliminated trays. All food waste is composted and bottled water is not sold on campus.

Green Building

The college works with energy consultants to design building projects, and three buildings meet both LEED and Energy Star-label criteria. The new student housing was designed to be powered with renewable energy. All new construction features compost toilets, waterless urinals, and shower heat recovery from greywater.

Student Involvement

Students sit on campus committees, including the planning and building committee and the policy advisory body for the climate action plan. The Campus Committee for Sustainability has worked on improving the campus composting system, bike use, and food container recycling. The group has also planned sustainability activities for fall 2009 orientation. The community bike program is run by students.

Transportation

The college runs a nighttime shuttle to nearby Bar Harbor during the school year. The bike-sharing program allows students and employees to check out a bike for up to a full trimester, and free safety equipment is available to bike riders. Development of campus pathways incorporates considerations to make them bike-friendly.
