College Sustainability Report Card 2010

The college adheres to the Los Angeles Community College District's sustainable design standards. The Bond Steering Committee worked to address LEED certification requirements and sustainability measures for all campus construction projects. The campus's master contracts call for Energy Star products, green cleaning products, and only recyclable furniture is purchased through the LACCD Furniture Value Program. LACCD's carpet purchasing policies aim to minimize VOC emissions and require that all old carpeting be recycled. The district's chancellor signed the Presidents' Climate Commitment in 2007.

The campus has completed a greenhouse gas emissions inventory, and purchases some renewable energy. Campus energy efficiency initiatives include a demand-side energy management project, a thermal energy storage system, and building modernization.

The Los Angeles Community College District’s $6.1 billion Sustainable Building Program is providing Los Angeles City College with $593 million to renovate and modernize its facilities. Following its board-mandated sustainable building policy, which states that all new buildings meet LEED certification standards, the college has already opened two new green buildings, the Martin Luther King Jr. Library and the Child and Family Studies Building. Room monitoring devices and waterless urinals are also currently being installed throughout campus.

The college has a student environmental club.

Students enrolled full time at Los Angeles City College are eligible to participate in the district’s subsidized transit pass program, through which they receive a six-month Metro pass for $15, representing a discount of 40 percent. The college’s master plan provides pedestrian-friendly space, and improved pedestrian connections are planned to connect with transit services.
