The college adheres to the Los Angeles Community College District's sustainable design standards. The district is working to develop a green purchasing policy. Only recyclable furniture is purchased through the LACCD Furniture Value Program, and the college adheres to the district's carpet purchasing policies, which aim to minimize VOC emissions and require that all old carpet be recycled. The district's chancellor signed the Presidents' Climate Commitment in 2007.
A solar array provides 8 percent of total campus energy. The campus has completed a greenhouse gas emissions inventory, and a central plant facility will increase energy efficiency.

The Los Angeles Community College District’s $6.1 billion Sustainable Building Program is providing Los Angeles Southwest College with $417 million to renovate and modernize its facilities. Following its board-mandated sustainable building policy, which states that all new buildings meet LEED certification standards, the college has already opened several green projects, including its new Child Development Center and Education Complex and its Student Services Building. The college has installed waterless urinals throughout the campus, as well as low-flow sensor faucets in some restrooms. The college plans to install motion sensor lighting. New LEED-certified buildings on campus have educational displays that inform visitors about sustainable design.
The campus participates in RecycleMania. There are no known active student groups related to sustainability.
Students enrolled full time at Los Angeles Southwest College are eligible to participate in the district’s subsidized transit pass program, through which they receive a six-month Metro pass for $15, representing a discount of 40 percent. Additionally, the college’s master plan provides pedestrian-friendly space, and improved pedestrian connections are planned to connect with transit services.
