A 
The subcommittees of the Chancellor's Committee on Sustainability and Energy draft policies on a range of sustainability issues. Two sustainability staff are employed by the university, and a sustainability office was created in January 2008 that reports to the chancellor. UIC publications use 100 percent postconsumer recycled content paper.

Climate Change & Energy

The university has completed a carbon emissions inventory and made a commitment to reduce emissions 80 percent below 2004 levels by 2050, not including offsets. Energy efficiency measures include lighting retrofits, reflective and insulated roofs, and HVAC system upgrades.

Food & Recycling
A 
Dining services purchases produce, dairy products, meats, and baked goods locally, and serves exclusively fair trade coffee. All dining halls are trayless. The "Great Stuff Exchange" allows for the reuse of office supplies. In the fall, the university will begin sourcing items from an on-campus garden.

Green Building

New construction and renovation projects exceeding five million dollars must meet LEED Silver requirements. The university has performed lighting retrofits, and has low-flow toilets and faucets in 25 percent of the east campus. Geothermal heating and cooling is used to conserve energy and make classrooms more comfortable.

Student Involvement

The university offers office-based sustainability internships. UIC EcoCampus, a student group, works to improve campus recycling, address environmental injustice, and is involved in a public transit campaign. The College of Cycling group organized a Bike to Work week and assisted with master planning for the campus.

Transportation
A 
Public transportation is partially subsidized for students, and faculty and staff may participate in a pretax transit benefit program. A shuttle runs within the campus as well as to local destinations. Some buses run on compressed gas, and there are plans to run others on biodiesel.

Endowment Transparency

A list of all endowment holdings is only made available to trustees and senior administrators. The university makes a list of external managers available to the public online. A list of votes cast on proxy resolutions is made available only to trustees and senior administrators upon request.

The university aims to optimize investment return and does not invest in renewable energy funds or community development loan funds. One of the university's fund managers includes sustainability factors.
