Administration

The list of Administration Leaders is comprised of 156 schools that earned “A” grades in this category. Below is a sample of ten very different institutions that all qualified for the list. These summaries are based on data from each school’s profile page.

 

The Sustainability Steering Committee at  Agnes Scott College  has completed a climate action plan, increased the amount of sustainably-produced food in dining halls, and implemented composting around campus. A green purchasing policy requires the purchase of Energy Star appliances. Office Green Teams encourage colleagues to adopt sustainable working habits.

 

The  California Institute of Technology has a revolving loan fund that draws money from the endowment to fund energy efficiency projects. The Sustainability Council has implemented a new campus-wide recycling and composting system, a rebate system for fuel-efficient vehicles, and a campus sustainability guide, among other initiatives. The custodial department utilizes exclusively recycled paper products and green cleaning products.

 

Sustainability committees at  Colgate University have worked to draft a climate action plan, establish a community garden, and create a ride-share program, among other initiatives.  The Green Office Program encourages staff to conserve resources. Alumni can donate to a fund for sustainability projects on campus.

 

Sustainability is one of the three imperatives in Luther College 's new strategic plan. The Campus Sustainability Council works on initiatives ranging from regional cooperation on sustainability issues to instituting water metering on campus, and the sustainability department employs two full-time staff members. The college also presents a sustainability award to employees with innovative green ideas.

 

Sustainability is incorporated into Macalester College 's master plan, and a green purchasing policy is currently under review. The sustainability office employs a full-time manager, and two committees oversee campus initiatives. Each department develops its own sustainability action plan and trains staff in its implementation. A revolving loan fund and a green alumni fund sponsor some sustainability projects.

 

North Carolina State University ’s Campus Environmental Sustainability Team has drafted a climate action plan to be released in 2011. A full-time director manages the sustainability office and multiple other staff members are involved with implementing the University’s initiatives. Orientation for new staff includes training on environmental stewardship programs at NCSU.

 

Rider University  incorporates sustainability throughout its curriculum and operations, and finalized its first climate action plan in January 2010. The Energy and Sustainability Steering Committee has implemented sustainability programs, such as a green film series, and provides reusable BPA-free water bottles to students at fall events. The university employs a full-time coordinator and a part-time graduate assistant to maintain campus sustainability projects.

 

The  University of San Francisco has a formal sustainability policy, and the university's sustainability committee, the Green Team, recently worked to eliminate bottled water in dining halls. It has also initiated a student fee to help fund campus “greening” projects. Energy Star appliances, cleaning products, and lighting are purchased, and the university buys paper made from 100 percent postconsumer recycled content.

 

The  University of Texas – Dallas approved a sustainability policy in spring 2010. The school has a sustainability committee comprised of students, faculty, staff, and administrators, and the sustainability office employs a full-time energy conservation and sustainability manager. The university strives to purchase energy-efficient equipment whenever possible and uses certified green cleaning products. A revolving account funds on-campus energy and water efficiency projects.

 

Wellesley College  hired a director of sustainability in 2009, and sustainability is a component in the college's master and strategic plans. The Sustainability Advisory Committee supports the Class of 1957 Alumni Green Fund, which provides grants of up to $10,000 for campus sustainability projects. All appliances purchased for the campus are Energy Star qualified, and all computers are EPEAT certified.
