During the 2009-2010 academic year, the sustainability task force created a new bachelor's degree in sustainability science and also completed its first campus-wide greenhouse gas emissions inventory. A sustainability coordinator organizes sustainability programs for the student body.
The university utilizes cogeneration to produce energy and has implemented numerous energy-saving measures, including temperature setbacks, energy management systems, and LED lighting. Kean's campus also features three geothermal systems and solar photovoltaics.
The university purchases local produce and organic dairy products and also serves some fair trade coffee and tea on campus. All dining halls are trayless, and all disposable dishware used on campus is biodegradable. Kean recently installed an aerobic composter and composts preconsumer food scraps at all meals. The university has completed a food waste audit and recycles used cooking oil for biodiesel production. Kean also composts or mulches all of its landscaping waste.
The New Jersey Center for Science, Technology and Mathematics Education is LEED Gold certified and features a green roof. The Center for Academic Success is also LEED Certified. Lighting sensors and variable speed drives have been installed on campus to reduce energy use.
The university hosted a sustainability essay contest for students in 2010 and awarded cash prizes to the winners. The FOCUS student group raises awareness about environmental issues on campus and recently organized Earth Week festivities and a green segment in the Kean Fashion Show.
Kean's campus fleet includes 28 electric vehicles. The university operates a courtesy shuttle to off-campus locations. Most employees observe a four-day work week from late spring to late summer.
