Professors are encouraged to keep field trips as local as possible and to utilize the MAC campus resources as much as possible. We have a horticultural center and a farm (dairy farm, corn crops, etc.) that we do research with and we sell a lot of our produce to the campus community and the local residents.

Many projects are in the works to help reduce our electrical consumption. One such project is to re-model our power house. Instead of one large power house we will have many small areas that distribute power to each building thus reducing electrical usage.

Our food is mostly local and fresh. We sell organic foods made at our horticultural center and our farm and we also offer green packaging (biodegradable containers) for take-out foods. We encourage our customers to bring their own dishware, bags, etc. and we offer financial incentives for those who do. Student groups compost all leftover foods (not meat) in our student composter. We also have a student group who recycles food from grocery foods (foods that are too old to sell but still good) and offers free meals to campus community.

All future construction on campus will be "green" and certified LEED. This is a mandate of the sustainability policy and an agreement between student society and administration.

An initiative towards planting more perennials and less annuals has been made. Most plants are grown in our campus greenhouses and our plant "waste" is composted in our composters.

There are approx. 25 student clubs on campus.  Approx. 10 of these have sustainable mandates. Some compost across campus, some offer free meals from left over grocery store foods, some offer information, some offer activities and involvement in the community, some offer knowledge on how the environment can work for you (making honey for example).

Following a project from John Abbott College (located on our campus) there is carpooling passes for drivers and financial incentives for them. Along with the sustainability office downtown MAC campus is working on increasing bus transportation and a free program where carpoolers can find each other based on their similar schedules. Mac campus also offers free bike rentals for the campus community and maps of the local area.

Along with our new biodegradable containers offered at food serving stations, we encourage people to bring their own dishware (mugs, plates, bowls, utensils) and they will be exempt of paying the cost of the biodegradable dishware. (approx. $0.10 to $0.35)

CERES created a "green plege week" where we encouraged students and staf to take concret environmental actions to reduce their carbon and consumption foot prints.  We had significant student participation, with over a hundred students pledging to reduce their footprints.  During the green week we had a couple presentations including green activism.

The cafeterias at Macdonald capus now all give a discount for people who bring their own coffee mugs.

Hosted a "water plege week" simillar to our green plege week.  Students recieved braceletts for taking pleges to reduce their water consumption, by taking pleges such as shorter showeres, and turning the water off while they brush their teeth.  By encouraging students to take simple actions, and showing them the consequence of their actions has a very dirrect message.  Our "water plege week" had almost as many participants as the student ellections did!

We are a relatively small group, in a fairly apathetic campus.  We also attempted an energy saving campaign with the school administration, but they turned down our first plan, we will try again this year.

There is a position dedicated to all environmental initiatives within the student government. As well as a multy stake holder group called the mac environmental committee which brings together staff, faculty, and student groups to focus on environmental issues and sustainability around campus.

We have initiated a paper recovery program, where we recover sheets that have only been printed on one side. We use these sheets to make note books which we sell at the student book store.We also make hand painted grocery bags.

The PGSS environment committee is responsible for the implementation of the PGSS environmental policy - educating members about reducing their carbon imprint, etc... ;advising PGSS about matters relating to the environment; and working with other groups on campus on environmental matters. We educate PGSS members and others through speakers and film screenings at monthly Green Drinks events, our annual PGSS Green Month, and through our website at http://pgss-environment.mcgill.ca/

Describe any activities that your group or yourself, as a leader on campus, have undertaken that are not already included in your survey responses. If applicable, also describe off-campus and community efforts that relate to institutional sustainability at your school.

We helped with the creation of the $2.4 million Sustainability Projects Fund at Mcgill and have a representative evaluating project submissions. We also have events making people aware about the Fund and hope to submit a project application in the next month to study various possibilities to further green the graduate house (Thomson House) - possible green roof, indoor plants, energy conservation through better windows, more local sourcing of food by the restaurant, etc...

• We created and organized the first ever Rethink Your Curriculum Challenge.  The results were presented to the entire McGill Community at the 8th Annual Rethink conference by SMP volunteer David Gray Donald., on October 22, 2009. The challenge asks students from all 55 departments at McGill to assess the knowledge they have been given in respect to sustainability in their specific field (awareness or literacy), the opportunities they have been given to apply that knowledge (action or participation), and most importantly their ideas for what could and should be done (creativity). The best two papers from each department were awarded small cash awards, and along with a synthesis of all the relevant ideas amassed from the other submissions, and encouraged to follow up with faculty advisors or professors to translate the ideas into curriculum based change (empowerment through ‘deliverables’).

Over the course of the summer and fall, student leaders, one of which coordinates the SMP researched and authored a proposal for the creation of a Sustainability Projects Fund (SPF), Sustainability Projects Fund Working Group, the creation of the Sustainability Projects Fund Coordinator position and 3 part-time student positions in tandem with this position. All 4 goals of the proposal were achieved and are currently being implemented.  Once the aVP Operations, VP Finance and Provost of McGill University to committed establish, fund and staff the SPF (commit to raise half the monies, Approx. 1.25 million over the next 3 years, which will be matched dollar for dollar by students), the Sustainable McGill Project volunteers: • Initiated the undergraduate referendums on both campuses in order to match this funding, through .50 cent per credit levy (per student, per semester).  • Built student support for the fund through campus media through social networking, through meetings with and council discussions at every undergraduate student association and through the organization of mass classroom announcements and social events.  • Designed and led campaigns collaboratively that built a volunteer team and recruited 200+ person yes committee,  with the referendum garnering 79% and 88% approval at the downtown and MAC campus referendums, respectively, as well as second highest voter turnout in school’s history. The Post Graduate Student Society also successfully passed the motion March 26th, 2010. • Organized a public forum on the SPF in order to spread the message and encourage broad participation in the SPF.  “Sustainability Projects Fund Community Forum” Funded by a grant from the IMPACT! 09’: Co-operators Youth Conference for Sustainability Leadership, we provided free food and beer to over 500 McGill community members, and gave presentations explaining the vision for the fund and how to apply.
