The group is very environmentally minded and is up to date with the current issues the world faces which is a key factor when trying to make changes.

The Greek community is the home to many large houses with occupancies on average around 30 people and energy usage is very high. it is also tough to effectively control energy consumption when there are so many individuals living in one space. We have covered potential methods to reduce energy consumption including saver switches for air-conditioning unit, efficient lighting, renewable energy for electricity etc.

Many of the homes do not have a recycling program in place and end up increasing their waste stream immensely by throwing away recyclable materials. I have had conversations with the Universities recycling program to try and work together to create a Greek-wide program. During the time of the conversations, the University was having trouble selling their own recyclables to potential buyers and didn't have any room for the Greek's materials.

We ran an activity where representatives from each house made water-displacing mechanisms out of pop bottles, sand, and duct tape. We also push for houses to purchase low flow shower heads and faucet attachments.

Additional Comments

Majority of the modifications that we recommend cost money and most Greek houses are on a tight budget and don't have the funds to make these improvements. We are constantly applying for grants but have yet to be successful. Education is the most important aspect due to the fact that most people are unaware of how inefficient their homes are. Through this education we hope our members will make positive lifestyle changes and act as a role model for the other members of their Greek house, their friends, classmates, and families.

Each year Greeks Going Green puts on an Earth Day service event. This year we paired with SECIA and were able to clean up and maintain multiple community gardens around the Como Neighborhood.

The topics, incentives, and rewards of the Faculty Case Competition vary from year to year. What is constant is the general setup: two teams of Carlson faculty are provided a sustainability-related case and compete against each other in a two-hour event hosted by Net Impact. The event is judged by the Carlson MBA student body. Questions are generated from the audience. The winners of the competition have each historically been given $50 gift cards to The Wedge, a local, organic Co-op in the area.

On a business school scale, our MBAA (MBA Association) student governing body manages activities and groups within the school. The Net Impact organization is under the MBAA umbrella, receiving its funding from the organization and aligning with it's high level goals of positively enhancing the experience of the student body and promoting the University of Minnesota.

Many of the initiatives had been mentioned in earlier sections: faculty case competition, Neighborhood Business Fellows, common Net Impact initiatives such as campus greening, curriculum development, and non-profit development. We hosted a "penny wars" event in partnership with a charity auction supporting a local food bank. The Net Impact organization also brought roughly 15 students to the yearly national conference (held in Ithaca, NY this past year). The EDF Climate Corps program also hosted its first fellow from Carlson.

Additional Comments

Unlike most groups, our group was focused around the US DOE Solar Decathlon 2009 competition.  All the issues addressed relate to the design, construction, and operation of our solar house (called the ICON Solar house) and the competition in Washington, DC.

We have outreach events to teach people about solar technologies, and sustainable building technologies.  We have worked with K-12 children at the Wired 2020 event at the Mall of America, we have had interactive booths at the State Fair (in the U Building and the Eco Building), as well as a number of events held at our construction site (Re-Use Center in St. Paul and the St. Paul campus).  We also hold events for our student members, connecting them with professionals in the area (in the fields of engineering, architecture, and construction) and having these professionals act as resources for our work on the solar house.
