Conducted first unoffical energy audit and developed an action plan for a more thorough follow-up energy audit. We also held the first energy-saving game among the apartments with plans for a wider-reaching, more competitive game next year where we can determine exactly how much energy has been saved.

Instituted the first recycling program ever to run in the apartments. Participating students received an 18-gallon bin for their apartment and set it outside every Friday afternoon for Sustenants to come around and empty. This program diverted at least 100 pounds of recylables each week from what would otherwise most likely have been thrown in the trash.

Additional Comments

We also participated in Recyclemania and held multiple drives to collect recycling. We came in 5th place in the country for pounds of paper recycled per person.

The freshman apartment with the greatest pounds of recyclables collected wins points for their housing competition. The winner among non-freshman buildings wins a pizza party.

We collected over 1,000 pounds of recyclables as a result of this competition.

As competitors bring their recyclables in to be weighed, we inform them of how they can recycle on a regular basis and sometimes are able to sign them up for the apartment recycling program.

We collect donations from various student groups and outside organizations to provide a monetary reward for the apartment which shows the greatest sustained reduction in electricity use.

This year the competition showed a small but measurable decrease in energy consumption. We are hoping for a much larger reduction when we hold the competition again next year.

As the competition lasts over a period of several months students develop energy-saving habits instead of just holding out for a small amount of time and then returning to old routines.

The Student Government Sustainability Committee, founded in Fall 2009, is dedicated to exploring sustainable issues that affect students at The University of Texas at Dallas and assisting, when possible, in implementing sustainable measures that benefit the student body as a whole.

Describe any activities that your group or yourself, as a leader on campus, have undertaken that are not already included in your survey responses. If applicable, also describe off-campus and community efforts that relate to institutional sustainability at your school.

-researching the Green Fee bill recently passed in Texas and working to get as many students as possible to vote their opinion on the issue.-sponsoring many Earth Day events such as providing the student body with recyclable tote bags and a screening of the movie Tapped.

The competition focused solely on the freshman and sophomore living in the Phase 8 apartment complexes. The reward for first prize included a $25 dollar gift card to each of the four roommates in the apartment that reduced its energy by the greatest percentage from the last month done over a three-month spread. The amount of energy consumed from January to February was compared to the energy consumed from February to March.

The average percent reduction in energy consumption in the apartments from the January to February period to the February to March period was around 12%. However, that percentage may reflect the natural decline in consumption of electricity that occurs during spring making it difficult to isolate the response of students in the competition as the cause.

This was the first year the competition was held and although well thought out, the program design was still flawed. It is likely that we will hold a revised competition to encourage energy reduction next year but expand it to the whole university and examine energy bills and monthly consumption over a larger spread and not simply read individual meters.

Yes

I am the chair of the sustainability committee which is an ad-hoc committee in student government formed this year. The committee is allowed to bring bills or proposals before senate and request monetary allocations for committee projects.

 

Please describe any additional campus sustainability activities or projects that you or your group has initiated at your school:

Describe any activities that your group or yourself, as a leader on campus, have undertaken that are not already included in your survey responses. If applicable, also describe off-campus and community efforts that relate to institutional sustainability at your school.

On Earth day, the committee put together an earth day fair with the other environmentally oriented student groups on campus. We handed out re-usable grocery bags with the Student Government and UT Dallas logos on them and held a shirt recycling drive where students could donate old clothes and in return receive university t-shirts leftover from functions that year. In addition, the committee put on a free screening of the film Tapped for students which discussed the environmental and health hazards of plastic water bottle consumption.
