The Kansas Board of Regents has recommended a system-wide policy on sustainability. The university has adopted a fuel and energy conservation policy and encourages the purchase of energy-efficient appliances.
The university utilizes the state's Facility Conservation Improvement Program and has undertaken projects to improve efficiency on campus, including upgrades of boilers, chillers, and light fixtures.
Dining services purchases some food from local growers and distributors, including all dairy products. The cafeteria also purchases some vegetarian-fed beef and sustainably harvested seafood. The university serves exclusively fair trade coffee, and a trayless dining program is in its sixth year. Used cooking oil is recycled for biodiesel, and students encourage recycling on campus.
The university considers energy efficiency measures for all new construction, major renovations, and replacement of HVAC and electrical systems. The university’s public FM radio station building features a green roof and Agriboard sidewall panels composed of compressed straw.
Wichita Green Group, a student organization, works on recycling, conservation, and sustainability education initiatives. The group organizes a regional Midwest Green Fest on Earth Day each year.
WSU offers a shuttle service to two off-campus locations and sponsors a van-sharing program to facilitate vanpools. Campus police use a battery-powered, three-wheel platform vehicle for patrolling the campus, as well as a battery-powered utility cart.
The Wichita State University Foundation makes a list of all holdings available to trustees and some senior administrators, and only asset allocation information available to the general public, on the foundation website. The foundation does not make its shareholder voting record public.
The foundation aims to optimize investment returns and is exploring, but not currently invested in, renewable energy funds.
The foundation asks that its investment managers handle the details of proxy voting.
